First real bike ride

Just over a week ago I taught Megan to ride her bike without stabilisers. It took about an hour for her to get her balance and about another hour to be able to ride her bike from a standing start. As you can imagine there were smiles all around and no one was more pleased than Megan.

The following week she insisted I went out with her every evening to practice going up and down the road and around our little estate. One evening the inevitable happened and she fell off and head butted the ground. Not to be put off by her experience, one bleeding lip and scratched knee later, we're off again going up and down the road.

This Sunday was no different, except that I mentioned we could go for a proper ride down the local cycle path next to Doxey marshes. She was apprehensive at first as I told her it was a long path. Approximately 1.5 miles later she said she'd had enough and was ready to go home. I told her that if we cycle just a bit more (another 0.2 mile) we would be at the end of the cycle path and could then go home. She agreed and we set off again to the end of the path, then turned around to go home. Thinking she would be tired after cycling 3.4 miles I guessed that would be it for the day. How wrong I was. Nearing home, she said, "when we get home, lets have a drink and a 5 minute rest, and then can we do it again?".

After getting home and about 4 hours later, she said lets go out on our bikes again. I assumed she meant up and down the road as usual. Not a chance. I said "where shall be go?" "Down Doxey marshes, right to the end", Megan replied. And so we did.

6.8 miles (3.4 miles times 2) on her first real bike ride. Wow, she has me stunned.....where to next I wonder.

Well done Megan!
